The Compost Cook was created accidentally, out of necessity. I became ‘The Composter’ because I have a huge appetite and refuse to waste food and spend more money then necessary.  If I simply had a large appetite and no money I could live off of ramen noodles, Kraft dinner and toast. However, I am obsessed with my health and knowing exactly what I am putting in my body.  I love being challenged and this was yet another challenge…a challenge that hasn’t stopped for three years and counting.

Is YOUR body a temple?

I want to teach people about the possibilities that cooking for yourself offers. With tuition to pay for and art supplies adding up, my budget was shrinking and I no longer could afford to eat out or buy food to go. Instead I started cooking what I wanted to eat in those restaurants for myself, at home! I realized how beneficial and fun this could be…you become the maitre d’, the chef, the sous-chef and the patron. You are able to micro-manage your meals and make any dietary changes needed.

I am inspired by blogs such as Spabettie, Oh-She-Glows and Chocolate Covered Katie. All of my recipes can be altered to fit gluten-free and vegan diets. In The Compost Cook’s Five Ingredients Five Ways, I show readers that with just the basics you can make delicious food! I also show them that knowledge is power and that food should be investigated; I do this through educating about each ingredient before each chapter and offering food facts throughout the book. I use little to no equipment and ensure that ingredients are easily available. I aim that others will be inspired, empowered and excited about cooking.

I was living in Seoul, South Korea studying Fashion Design. Korea confirmed my love for cooking, food and sharing meals…it also allowed me to travel to Japan, Singapore and Malaysia to check out their fashion and food, too!

After Seoul, I moved back to Halifax, Nova Scotia, a charming student-filled city where I attended NSCAD University, studying Textiles and Art History.

NOW, I am living in New York City, where I have an art studio in DUMBO, Brooklyn and study contemporary art with faculty from NYU, Princeton, Pratt, Parsons and Columbia…that is when I’m not attending countless foodie or fitness events.

I hope to share, excite and intrigue my readers through my posts about food, fitness and the everyday.

  1. Hey Girl!! I came across your page through “A Dash Of Meg” last week when you were featured on her Hi 5 post. Your comment intrigued me so I checked out your page and was automatically drawn in! I am moving to NYC April 1st for school and I cannot wait. I was there this past weekend looking for an apartment and I luckily found one in mid town east. I can totally understand your frustration with looking for places. I am literally counting the days until I move. I have been feeling really overwhelmed with it all, especially after being there over the past weekend and moving from the Suburbs north of Toronto ON. However your blog has totally inspired me and made me feel more comfortable with the whole thing! I look forward to each of your posts, never know maybe one day we will bump into each other at a fitness class or two! Take care xoxo

  2. Wow, love your motto, and I hear ya, for sure. Nothing better than home cooked meals. Especially when you invest in good ingredients. If you don’t have a sink full of dishes and a messy kitchen then somethings wrong, lol.

  3. Hi, you are extremely inspiring. I live in Caanada and long for change and travel…but kind of rock bottom financially and physically and spiritually right now. I see no contact here…email if you can or want :)
